Building a new media site for the podcast Reboot Chronicles

Web Design

Reboot Chronicles is a multi-media operation that produces an audio podcast, interviewing the C-suite from some of the world’s largest companies, along with accompanying videos and articles. Reboot Chronicle’s parent company, Reboot Partners, offers advisement services to Fortune 1000 companies at the executive level. They provide consulting services directly to CEOs to help with scale in the digital space. The podcast’s existing web presence was found on a single tab within the Reboot Partners website where it was competing with the company’s consultant offerings and other projects.

Reboot Chronicles had once partnered with an additional company, providing greater audience reach and another way for users to find and listen to the podcast online. Since dissolving that partnership, audience rates have fallen. I was brought on to design and build a new media site for Reboot Chronicles to increase its web presence and highlight all of the company’s offerings. Once the site is complete, I will also rebuild the Reboot Partners’ site in order to maintain a unified brand experience across the internet.

Research

I collaborated with a user experience researcher, who conducted 7 user interviews and moderated usability tests, which allowed for the observation of users’ navigation processes in real time while receiving their verbal feedback on a limited budget.

The researcher utilized Reboots’ social media following for recruitment and filtered out people who are in the UX field to maintain user objectivity.

Using a moderator guide, the researcher conducted interviews and logged the results to help with the analysis, being able to compare horizontally across the interviews.

Analysis

Having reviewed information gathered through the research, we identified patterns and pain points, the biggest of which was a pattern of Reboot Chronicles being overshadowed on the Reboot Partners' website—all six users were confused about how to find Reboot Chronicles if they were not clicking links they found on social media. Users believed the web presence of Reboot Chronicles was tied to social media channels.

Since the primary goal of rebootpartners.com is to gain leads on executive advisement, the goals of the articles and podcasts of Reboot Chronicles are overshadowed.

Other notable insights

Most users were unaware that there were corresponding articles to each podcast

Users had difficulty finding the video section because the audio section took up most of their screen with its own scrollbar

Users noted the last time they saw a video of a podcast was on TikTok which is a vertical format

Design

Having shared the research insights with the stakeholders, I began working on designing a new site that would address the issues brought up during research. I gained feedback throughout the project from an art director and stakeholders.

Reboot Chronicle’s website is currently being built. Below are the mid-fidelity wireframes approved by the stakeholders that will be translated onto the website

This is the top of the landing page being built for the new site. By isolating just what is necessary for this media site, it is no longer competing with Reboot Partners’ other ventures

The “Episodes” page allows users to find all of the Reboot Chronicles episodes, which include the audio, video, and corresponding articles.

The individual episode’s page will include information about the episode’s guest, where to listen, a link to a corresponding Forbes article (if provided), as well as the audio, video, and article.

The site will also feature articles written for each individual episode as well as those specifically written for Forbes by the host of the show. This page will serve as a way for users to find all of the articles in one place.

Next Steps

After the first iteration of the site has been built, the user researcher will conduct moderated usability tests on the high-fidelity prototype.

This page will be updated throughout the process.
