Designing a movie database built around a filtering system

Website design

Finding the perfect movie for the occasion is a common problem these days. My client and I set out to make it a little bit easier using Hallmark’s extensive catalogue.

HallmarkMovieDatabase is a passion project for the client with the goal of making it easy to filter through Hallmark’s extensive movie selection in order to find the perfect movie for any occasion. Hallmark has made well over a thousand movies and with no clear and easy way to browse their collection, my client set out to create a database to do just that.

Design

A large portion of this project was on the back end, sourcing data and images about each film in order to properly filter the massive library of movies. The website itself was designed to showcase this filtering using multiple category carousels on the landing page and the search/filtering navigation front and center. The vast majority of the other pages are dedicated to the individual movies, linking them to where one can watch them as well as all of the necessary information a user might need in order to make their decision.

Final Thoughts

As is often the case with website design projects, the final product that goes live tends to look different from the pages I designed. Depending on the scope, budget, timeline, etc. of the project, my work may finish before the web developer is done building the site. Although I offered suggestions as the site was coming along, I was less involved in the final look of the product after I handed off the designs and worked through the data spreadsheets. I think the overall structure and flow are more or less the same, but the colors, buttons, fonts, and spacing are all different. It isn’t always easy as a designer to see your work changed, but this is how many of these projects go. As long as the client is happy with the result, I consider it a success.
